So, as some of you may remember my FieSTa finally started making the dreaded input-shaft- bearing whine now that its out of warranty... With 68K miles on it Ford has offered to pay 2/3rds of the cost of a tranmission replacement.

Kinja'd!!!

Not my picture, but that is what a FieSTa tranny looks like...

I’ve elected to take them up on the offer. They could have tried to be dicks and said “oh, sorry, its out o f warranty, too bad for you” and although I would certainly have liked to get a FREE new transmission, this counts as a VERY cheap new transmission. Cheaper than I could get a used/rebuilt installed for. In fact, its gonna be about what an extentended warranty upgrade would have cost.

in any case... You takes yer licks and when I go to trade it in I can say it has a brand new transmission... :P

Its been a great little fun machine, and if I weren’t living out where mud season can swallow it whole, I ‘d probably be happy to keep driving it until the new trans dies, or some other terrible thing goes wrong... But we need something that will handle the roads here better, and despite my best efforts, Mrs. BoostAddict still does not like to drive stick, meaning she takes the truck everywhere, as its our automatic vehicle... And that is expensive both for gas and wear and tear on a vehicle we need to be available for towing livestock around.

So once it gets the new trans in, we’ll be off to the Hyundai dealer to get it traded on a Kona Limited.

Thats a pretty good deal actually. My friends GTI ate it’s camshaft just out of warranty and VW told him to take a hike.

Yeah, I would agree that’s a pretty good offer.

Dang, ruined transmissions well before 100k. Guess the FiST is a typical Ford product then...

I’m confused, but it may be because I cut my automotive teeth in the Subaru world. You replaced the trasmision on a 68k mile vehicle you were planning on trading in because of input shaft sound? No actual finctional issues? A dealer taking a trade in isn’t going to care that there’s a new transmission in the vehicle anymore than they’d care that a used car makes a whining sound. They’ll just dump it at an auction if they can’t sell it.

Might as well try to sell it private party since you still had to shell out coin on a transmission you won’t be using. That or see if you can get the old tranny back and sell it on CL.

If Ford keeps the transmission they really weren’t doing you a favor, as they probably aren’t out anything on the swap. They’re probably putting a refurbished on in there from another FieSTa that crapped out. If anything it’s free advertising as the story is now “Ford helped me out” rather than “Ford put a crap transmission in my car”.

However, I may have this all wrong, as it’s totally normal for a 70k mile Subaru to have a noisy input shaft bearing (it sounds like a rallycar!).

So, when the input shaft bearing dies it sheds metal into the rest of the transmission and you get heavy particulate concentrations in the fluid. Apparently this particular trans is especially sensetive to said particulates (the dealer service guys says the fluid it nice and sparkly) and it borks the rest of the bearings and chews up the synchros. Also, according to info I have found replacing the input shaft bearing(s) itself is such a PITA in this trans that it costs Ford less from a warranty stand point to just replace the whole thing. People seem to be getting NEW transmissions put in, not remans, from what I can tell. Its a well documented fault in FieSTas. The Hyundai dealer here is pretty sharp and pretty profitable, and the amount I’ll be paying to replace the trans may very well be made up in higher trade value. They’re the type of place that will notice the whine on a test drive, and use it against the customer to drive tradein value down. I’ve dealt with them before, and If i didn’t respect their knowlegeable sales people and excellent service department i’d probably be traveling to an out of state dealer thats hungrier for my money. I kinda have to respect and support them because they genuinely seem to know what the hell they are doing.

I have considered a private sale...

Damn, and people rip on Chrysler transmissions.....

How in the hell does a manual trans go to hell in 68k miles?

There are a ton of cars out there though that are fun and also unreliable so I guess it fits in lol. If this is a common thing I am sad because picking up a used FiST on the cheap was definitely an idea I had if I ever needed something more reliable than my STi. But if worrying about it blowing up is the same concern, it definitely will be further down  the list.

Look for one that had a new trans un der warranty? T here are more than a few out there. The rest of the car seems pretty solid, and mid 30s MPG, plus the terriffic chassis dynamics and eager engine make for a pretty damn great package... as long as the input shaft bearing isnt failing...

We spent a long time looking at AWD things with more than average ground clearance and the Kona really is a standout. The CX3 is great to drive, but the seats were not comfortable for me, and it isnt that quick off the line. The Jeep Rengade was much better than I expected, but only whe n equipped with a manual transmission, and Mrs. BoostAddict convinced me that she would be more likely to drive whatever we got voluntarily if it had an auto... We didnt even look at the HR-V and C-HR... The VW Golf Spotwagon Alltrack had a nice interior, but the drivin g dynamics were dissapointing, as were the short-people (Mrs. BoostAddict) ergonomics. Crosstrek was just a gutless wonder. Even the Kona with the 2.0 was a dissapointment (we're both used to turbo cars/trucks), but the Kona Limited with the 1.6t and the seven-speed DCT is a firecracker in the segment, and also a genuinely surprising handler.

I’m really hoping the Kona electric comes out at a solid price point (and actually comes out in the US as they say). That would likely be my next car, but I’m honestly considering Hyundai as my next vehicle. I really like the Rav4 Hybrid too, but haven’t test drove it. Glad you enjoyed it. I had one for a few days while we were in Florida, a base model. Even as a base model it was still a great feel, surprising quiet cabin, great sound system and very comfortable. It also had a ton of visibility.

yeah, the Kona manages to feel like a good small car, not a small SUV, which is a serious bon us in my book. The visibi lity is better tha n average, the seats are really good, it was the quietest thing we tested (the Golf Sportwag e n Alltrack really had an inexcusable amount of road noise) and the handling is excellent. I wish it had better steering feel (The CX3 handily spanks it there) , but the chassis and suspension dynamics are genuinely good.

My clubman was making some kind of bearing or crown gear noise by 80k. Pretty disappointed as I liked the car and those Getrags are supposed to be pretty good. Fortunately only heard at highway speed so quick traded it for the GTI. Our other MINI with the same transmission driven just as hard is getting to the same age and seems fine.

Glad to hear someone got something out of Ford. I was told to go pork myself when piston #3 broke at the wrist pin just a month after being in for the well known head gasket recall. Their basis voided warranty due to the mountune package purchased  from Ford Performance that specifically states will not void new vehicle warranty. Moral to my rant, should have bought a low mile Evo or new Golf.
